the Miracle of the Holy Corporal Day one Morning: arrive in Orvieto and visit to the Duomo and Cappella di San Brizio. Afternoon: depart for Bolsena and visit to Chiesa di Santa Cristina and Isola Bisentina. Return to Orvieto and stop at Sassotagliato. Day two Morning: depart for Todi, visit to the historical center and to Tempio della Consolazione. The tour ends with a visit to Santuario dell'Amore Misericordioso in Collevalenza. |
DUOMO on November 1290 Pope Nicholas IV laid the foundation stone of the new church. The magnificent façade was erected according to Maitani's project. The rose window is the work of the Florentine artist Andrea Orcagna. In the interior are the Cappella Nova frescoed by Luca Signorelli and the Cappella del Corporale BOLSENA this town is the birthplace of Santa Cristina. Points of interest include the Collegiata [XI century] and the cave where the sepulcher of the Saint was found ISOLA BISENTINA on this island there are two ancient chapels: Cappella della Crocifissione and Cappella del Tabor. These are important remains of a Franciscan settlement TODI the town's heyday waste 13th century, when as a free Comune it managed to annex Amelia and Terni. The Piazza del Popolo is described as the most perfect medieval square in Italy, with a trio of public palaces: Palazzo del Podestà, Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and Palazzo dei Priori. SAN FRANCESCO CHURCH several pieces of evidence testify the presence of San Francesco in Orvieto [where Pope Onorio III issued a bull on Franciscan rule]. Built in the early 13th century, the church contains remains of 14th century frescoes ascribed to Piero di Puccio CONVENTO DI SAN CRISPINO initially it was a Cistercian monastery, bought by Orvieto's inhabitants in 1551 for the Capuchin friars, the convent gave hospitality to San Crispino from Viterbo for about 40 years, who lived during the second half oh the XVIII century CONVENTO DI SANTA MARIA DELLA SCARZUOLA AND CITTÀ BUZZIANA Franciscan church of the XIII century in which a fresco dating 1240 and featuring St. Francis in levitation was found out. According to tradition, the Saint himself built here a hut made by "scarza", which gave the name to the convent. In 1956, the architect Tommaso Buzzi bought and turned the convent into a dreamlike town, called «la città buzziana» in his honor |

Visit to Lugnano in Teverina with the Collegiata. Return to Orvieto and stop at Convento di Sant'Angelo in Pantanelli. Day two Morning: visit to the Church of San Giovenale. Depart for Bagnoregio and visit of Cattedrale di San Nicola and the beautiful Civita, «the dying town». |
ALVIANO probably Roman, the town is dominated by the imposing castle, built by Offredo d'Alviano. The chapel inside the castle is decorated with XVII century frescoes, one of which features St. Francis' miracle of the swallows in Alviano LUGNANO IN TEVERINA about 1000 this commune belonged to the church. The following are worth a visit: the façade of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, Palazzo Pennone, the Monasteries of San Francesco [1229] and Cappuccini [1579] CONVENTO DI SANT' ANGELO IN PANTANELLI St. Francis himself took part in the building of the convent, built on the remains of an old castrum that the masters of Baschi gave the Saint. Outside the convent there is the cave where Francis slept, the oak that the Saint planted, and the rock from which he preached to the fishes. Jacopone da Todi [who composed there the famous Stabat Mater] and Bernardino da Siena lived there, too SAN GIOVENALE CHURCH known as one of Orvieto's oldest churches, it contains XIII-XIV century frescoes, like the "lignum vitae" or "albero bonaventuriano" BAGNOREGIO probably pre-Etruscan, this small town was St. Bonaventura birthplace. The Saint's bones are preserved in a silver reliquary in the church of San Nicola. On the Belvedere there is the «Saint Bonaventura Cave», where the Saint was cured from a serious illness through St. Francis' intercession CIVITA DI BAGNOREGIO this town is perched high on a hill, which used to be linked with Bagnoregio by a thin line of earth which collapsed after a quake in 1695. CHIESA DI SAN DOMENICO according to tradition, it was the first church dedicated to S. Domenico. It was founded in 1220. Inside the church it's possible to see the pulpit of St. Thomas Aquinas ISTITUTO DEL SS. SALVATORE members of the public gave the institute to the Dominican nuns in 1910. Inside there is a sacred image of Christ that, during the centuries, has worked many miraculous recoveries CARNAIOLA a small medieval town, where Blessed Vanna was born. She lived in Orvieto during the second half of the XIII century and devoted herself to teaching indigent girl how to be dressmakers MONTEFIASCONE a small medieval town on a hill that faces the lake of Bolsena, it preserves in its territory traces of ancient settlements, belonging to the so called «Rinaldone» culture. Worth visiting the Roman church of San Flaviano [XI cent.], where the body of the Saint is preserved ACQUAPENDENTE this Etruscan town acquired a considerable importance in the X century thanks to the passing of pilgrims. It is worth visiting the Roman Church of Santo Sepolcro, where there is a crypt [national monument of the X-XI century] and a chapel that, according to tradition, contains some stones with spots of Jesus Christ's blood PROCENO probably founded by Porsenna, the king of Chiusi. The inhabitants dedicated a church to St. Agnes near the convent where the Saint has lived for 23 years |
